Day 1
As soon as we leave Edinburgh, we head towards Kennacraig, where we will take the ferry that will take us to the Holy Land of whisky, Islay! However, on our way there, we will make a short stop to catch sights of Inveraray castle. Then, onwards to Tarbet, to do some whisky shopping. It’s now just a short drive away to the ferry that will take us to Islay. Once there, you will be able to eat, relax and enjoy the sights.
Once on Islay, we will take you to your accommodation and, if you’re up for it, we will take you on a small tour of the island, where there is much more than whisky to discover…
Day 2, 3, 4 & 5
Among the sites that are a must, there are of course the 9 distilleries: Ardbeg, Lagavulin and Laphroaig – which are only a few miles apart – Bowmore, Kilchomen, Bruichladdie, Caol Ila, Bunnahabbain and the latest addition to this paradise, Ardnahoe.
In between those tours, you will be able to sample some of the fine island food – seafood and fish are reknown as fresh and delicious. Amond others, Ardnahoe has some magnificient views, Ardbeg’s café is a must and Kilchomen makes delicious brownies.
For those interested in history, we will stop at Finlaggan, the seat of the Lordship of the Isles. Those who enjoy the outdoors will be spoiled with the beaches near Machir Bay or the Kildalton cross and churchyard – where you should cross path with wild animals, including deer, if you go at dusk. We will also visit Islay Ales at Bridgend and taste a few of their beers. There are also nature reserves on Islay, and the Oa is well worth the detour.
Day 6
Heading home already… With many memories, pictures, and – maybe… - a few bottles of whisky, you will leave Islay by the ferry. This time, on our way back, we will stop on the shores of Loch Lomond for the spectacular views it offers. We can then offer you two options: either head down to Edinburgh via the Motorways, or detour by smaller roads towards Stirling.
Whatever your choice, your head and heart should be filled with wonderful memories of a small island many come back to, again and again.
