Stirling castle OR Wallace monument (visit one, photo stop at the other)
Bannockburn (lunch & visitor centre)
Glengloyne distillery (distillery tour)
During the middle ages, people used to say that “He who hold Stirling, holds the Highlands.” And you’ll understand why when you approach the castle… Set atop a natural rock promontory, it faces rising hills to the west and UK’s tallest mountains – the world-famous Highlands.
Facing the castle is Wallace monument, built after Scotland’s famous patriot, William Wallace. Both sites are of crucial historical importance because one of the nation’s most famous battle – Bannockburn – was fought nearby by Robert Bruce, whom many call Scotland’s greatest kings. Altogether, those three sites focus on Scotland’s history, mostly the wars of independence – waged in the late 13th - early 14th century.
Then, in memory of the great men who fought – and won – their nation’s independence, visit one of Scotland’s beloved distillery, Glengoyne – located directly on the Highland/ Lowlands line. There, learn what makes whisky so particular to the Scots.
*By the way, pay attention as you drive from Edinburgh to Stirling – the scenery could surprise you and you’ll see the journey can be as amazing as the destination!
Also, once in Glengoyne, ask if their whisky is from the Highlands or the Lowlands, and expect an unusual answer…!
